How To Distinguish Your Skin Type
There are 5 basic skin types: the normal, combination
, dry, oily, and the sensitive type.
Your skin is your primary defense from outside conditions that might harm your body. Also, a good looking skin adds to your beauty, so proper skin maintenance must be observed. To know which skin care or treatment is best for you, you must first know your skin type. Here's how to tell which among the 5 basic skin types you might belong to.
Normal
Any traces of oil will not be present if your skin is under the normal category. Your skin should be characterized by an elastic and supple feeling and the normal skin type is the least problematic among all the skin types. A normal skin should appear smooth and clean. It has excellent blood and nutrient circulation and should have a rosy complexion. Normal skin will still look good even at minimal care.
Combination
An example of a combination skin is when some traces of oil can be found on your nose and forehead, while the cheek area remains dry and flaky. Combination skin is characterized by both oily and dry types and special care is done to which area in the face is affected. The dry skin patches, usually found on cheeks will be treated with moisturizes while the oily areas like the nose should have more cleansing.
Dry
Dry skin feels a flaky and tight after cleansing it. A dry skin is easily vulnerable to have a sallow tone, fine pores, wrinkles and it is very prone to aging and irritation. Skin color may appear dull or dark due to excessive dead skin. To keep the dry skin healthy, you should do proper cleansing and treatment, and regularly apply moisturizers.
Oily
The oily skin has a characteristic enlarged pores and looks shiny. Oily skin is problematic as this skin type is very vulnerable to blemishes and blackheads. You can easily determine if your skin is shiny if a paper will have spots of facial oil after being pressed against it. On the lighter side, an oily skin is less prone to early aging and wrinkling. To treat oily skin, have a less-carbohydrate and less-fatty diet, observe thorough cleansing and minimize the use of heavy creams.
Sensitive
A sensitive skin is extremely dry, very tight and gets irritated easily. This skin type is frequently develops reddish and scaly patches which are usually itchy. Special type of care is needed for this problematic skin type. Specific skin care regimens might be used and you might need to consult from a skin expert to know which type of care is specific for your sensitive skin.
The bottom line is that in order for you to select the right skin care method, know your skin type. Some treatments may not work well for some types and you might end up doing some damage to your skin.
