I've been in a lot of brainstorms.Five person, ten person, 50 person.For me, they just don't work if there are more than two people in the room.Yeah, I know there are lots of smart people who will disagree. People who make goodbucks leading group brainstorms. And that's fine.They just don't work for me.In a group of three or more, people start to compete. The people with the best ideas hidethem so they won't get shot down by the comedians in the group.The people with the worst ideas ramble on and on about them to fulfill some hiddenagenda to show their bosses that they're creative.It's like the old joke about an elephant designed by a committee. It ends up looking like athree-legged gopher, or something.Working for years with some very creative Art Directors, I've found that our best ideasemerge at lunch.And yes, we really do write them on napkins sometimes.Size of the brainstorm: two people.
First we spend half an hour complaining that the task is too difficult. Then we range farand wide and come up with dozens of tidbits and half-baked ideas and sketches and falsestarts.Uncensored, uncritical, uninhibited.Lots of laughing, because humor and creativity go together like smelly diapers and...well,you get the picture.Then we zero in on our best three ideas and see if they have legs.If they do, they walk back to the ad agency with us.
