How To Drive Safely In The Rain
As anyone whos grown up with the notorious British climate will know
, rain is a fairly frequent occurrence in the UK. This poses potential risks for drivers, as even roads you think youre familiar with can be a somewhat different proposition when theres moisture on the ground. Inclement weather conditions mean you need to adjust your driving techniques accordingly, and take more care than you otherwise might. Of course you cant always account for the mistakes of other drivers, but by being more conscientious yourself, you can at least do your bit to promote road safety. After all, we all have responsibility to one another when were out and about on the roads.
There are a few things you should bear in mind when driving in the rain. The first and perhaps most important thing is to moderate the speeds at which you travel. You should remember that wet roads can be treacherous, and its relatively easy to lose grip when contending with surface moisture. All it takes is for you to approach a bend at excessive speed to result in a potentially serious accident. Concentration is key when driving in wet conditions, so be sure to keep an eye on your speedometer.
You should also take great care to avoid tailgating when driving in wet weather. Not only is tailgating generally irritating and rude and thereby highly likely to needlessly antagonise other drivers but it can also lead to serious collisions when the roads are wet. Simply leave a bit more space between yourself and the car in front than you otherwise would. That way, should the other driver have to brake suddenly, you have more time to react accordingly. Theres no excuse for tailgating other drivers at the best of times, but its particularly reckless when the roads are wet.
Before setting off, of course, you should take time to ensure your windows are clear of condensation. It goes without saying that condensation build-up can severely reduce visibility, which is just what you dont need when youre already facing tricky driving conditions. If you get caught in a severe shower and you dont feel comfortable with carrying on, then it might be a good idea for you to find a safe place to pull over and wait until conditions have improved a little. Driving in heavy rain can be disconcerting, particularly for inexperienced motorists, and if you dont feel youre fully in control of your vehicle, you may be better off simply taking a quick break.
