Affiliate marketing is a modern e-business buzzword

. It's an unfamiliar term to many, but can be a good way to earn money at home. Many people participate in affiliate marketing as a "side" business or part-time venture. Some are successful enough at it that they are able to earn a significant annual income this way.

The term "affiliate marketing" sounds daunting to some. However, an easy way to think of it is like a salesperson in a store. Let's say you go to buy a new car. A sales person finds out what you need and then helps you choose the right car. If he or she manages to complete a sale (that is, they sell you a car) then he/she receives a commission. This commission is the salesperson's "reward" from the car dealership's owner for selling his product.

Affiliate marketing works in much the same way, except it occurs online. A website owner partners with an online affiliate. He or she agrees to allow the affiliate to advertise products or services on his/her website. When a visitor to the website clicks on one of these ads, the website owner receives a financial reward for it. It's a bit like that car salesperson's commission.

Dozens of affiliate marketing programs are available for participation. Some of the most popular ones on the Internet include Amazon and Google. Anyone can sign up with one (or more) of them. It simply involves creating an account and providing some basic information.

If you don't already have a website, you can create one easily and inexpensively. Do this buy purchasing a website template and a domain name (website address). An even quicker and easier way to start to earn money at home through affiliate marketing is to sign up for one or more blogs. This is typically free, and you don't have to worry about purchasing a website template or even a domain name.

Next, create some content for your website or blog. You can do this yourself if you have some basic writing skills. Otherwise, you can hire a writer to do this for you.

Your website or blog should focus on a particular subject matter (for example: parenting, car racing, raising pedigree dogs, organic cooking, etc.). This way, you'll get ads on your website that are related to the subject of the site/blog. This increases the chances that visitors to your website actually click on your affiliate ads. It won't be long before you begin to earn money at home this way.

How much you can earn is really only limited by your advertising savvy. Targeting a popular niche topic and creating good text takes a bit of practice. Once you become more adept at it, you'll likely begin to see your profits rise.

Most of the work that will be required will be at the beginning when you're first starting up. It takes several hours to create your website(s) and get affiliate marketing accounts.

It takes a few weeks to a couple of months to tweak your site and begin rotating effective content (text). Once all of this work is done, it only requires an hour or two of weekly maintenance. After the initial work is done, you can earn money at home with very little ongoing effort.
