You can work with children of all ages, from little toddlers aged 4 or 5, right up to mature University students which could be any age from 18+. The older students, the more diversity there is in the type of subjects you could teach. You will need to be educated to degree level as well as undertaken specific teacher training.

Primary School Teacher

Working in a primary school means working with children from the ages of four to eleven, and you can usually specify which age group you would prefer to teach. As you will be working with young children in this teaching job, you will be responsible for teaching them to read and write in the first years. Later, you will be furthering their knowledge of all areas of the national curriculum while preparing them for secondary school as well as any SATs or exams they may face during their last stages of primary school. You will need to be extremely patient and maintain discipline as lessons may be regularly disrupted when pupils misbehave. You will have a close relationship with each childs parents, informing them exactly how their child is performing throughout their school life. You will be planning and delivering lessons for your pupils, through a number of simple engaging tasks like learning games or activities that will interest and motivate the students into a positive learning attitude that will influence the rest of their educational experience.

Secondary School Teacher

You will be working with pupils aged 11-16, planning and delivering lessons, this time in a more specific subject that you specialise in. Students will be more mature than in primary schools, and so you can maintain a healthy relationship with pupils, offering support and guidance with anything they may need, whether it is to do with school work or problems in their outside life. You will be setting homework and marking and delivering feedback. Teaching older students in secondary schools, they are able to choose which extra subjects they can do for their GCSEs, alongside the national curriculum subjects meaning you will need to assist with revision techniques. As part of this teaching job, you will also need to be part of department meetings, liaising with other teachers about lesson plans and curriculum changes and any students who you may think are struggling.

College/Sixth Form Teacher

Students will be between the ages of 16-19, and will have chosen their own subjects to study, studying a lot fewer but in a much more in-depth detail. Teachers will need to be highly specialist in their area of expertise and need to engage and motivate students in lessons, while setting more complex homework such as essays or research tasks and giving feedback for improvement. The teaching style of this teaching job will be much more independent than that of a secondary school, as pupils are expected to use their own initiative to learn. You will be setting target grades, preparing them to undertake their A Level (or equivalent) exams, providing revision and support for students, as well as marking coursework and mock exams to ensure students do as well as possible.
