How To Hang A Hammock

It takes different procedure to hang different types of hammocks safely

. While the overall procedure is similar, you dont necessarily need two trees that are spread evenly apart on order to hang a hammock in your backyard. You buy a hammock stand, install 2 posts, or install a single post with a tree.

The first thing that you should do is to measure the length of your hammock. This will help you to find out the equipment that youll require, and where the hammock needs to be positioned. Then, position two posts that are the appropriate distance apart or locate two trees that are about the same distance apart. For spreader bars for the hammock, anchor points that are 1 2 longer than the overall length of the hammock are perfect. The braces for the hammock may be adjusted to accommodate most hammocks.

Next, remove any debris such as rocks and cut any tree branches or shrubs from the hammock area.

To test the hammock, sit on the middle of one side of the hammock as if it were a large swing. Lie back and lift your legs. This way you will know if you have gotten the height correct for the hammock. If you havent, make the necessary tension adjustments to the chain links of the extension. If required, reposition the screw hooks.

Then, measure the height of the hammock at the anchor points. For the spreader bar type of hammock, 4 high is sufficient. If your hammock doesnt have spreader bars, hang it 5 to 8 high. Drill a small pilot hole in the anchor point and attach the hooks.

Next, attach an S hook with the supplied hardware ring and to one end of the hammock and then attach the S hook with the extension chain. Last, hang the extension chain to the screw hook on the anchor point. Repeat for the other side of the hammock.

Hammocks are made from a flexible material, such as cotton which will stretch in time. You should always use an extension chain between the screw and S hooks so that you can tighten up the slack. Dig a minimum of a 2 to 3 foot hole in the ground to install the hammock posts. For the hammock posts, you should use 4 X 6 hardwood that has been treated for exterior use. Use cement that dries quickly to set the posts. Permit the cement to dry for a minimum of 48 hours prior to use.
