How To Have a Great CV!
There is loads of information on the internet about CV writing, be it the CV format/ layout, CV length, CV tips and all manner of other guidance. I thought I would give you my quick thoughts on the matter, which I hope can help your improve your CV writing skills.
I started in recruitment in 1996, I have supplied contract/ interim and permanent staff to the Construction, Civil Engineering, Infrastructure and IT industries, and I believe I have enough experience to talk with authority on this matter. This is in no way meant to be an exhaustive, all encompassing article, just a few tips I hope you will find useful.
I thought I would give a few pointers here.
How to have a great CV!
Sell you. Your CV is the first impression a recruitment agency and/ or employer will judge you on and first impressions count. A good CV creates a good impression, a poor CV creates a poor impression.
Make your CV easy to read, clear headings.
Make your CV pleasing to the eye, bold or coloured headings can assist with this, and/ or spaced out text.
Be concise, 2-3 pages is enough, make sure you summarise your skills, experiences and qualifications.
Career summary, have your most current job first, then working backwards to your first job. If you have 20+ years experience, think, is the job you did 20 years ago relevant now.
When summarising your career, highlight what you have done, your job role, and your responsibilities'. Employers what to understand your capabilities, what you can and cannot do, not what your team or company can do.
Use headings, such as: professional profile, career summary, career objective, education and qualifications, professional training and development, IT skills, personal details, interests and activities, references.
Include employer testimonials, snippets or quotes if you have these. These may be summaries of references you have received. In the internet age we now live, it is not too difficult to get an email quote highlighting your performance, integrity, professionalism, abilities, etc.
Ensure you include all your contact details.
Get advice from a recruiting professional, such as a recruitment consultant, HR professional, or a person that conducts interviews regularly. What is their advice? What improvements do they suggest?
DO NOT refer to religion, politics or controversial hobbies/ interests.
