How To Hit Your Ball from Downhill Lie with Success

One golfing tip I never seem to get tired of is how to hit your ball from a downhill lie

. The country club I play at most is as hilly and up and down as you can imagine.

So I found Golf Magazine's Short Game & Technical expert Dave Pelz for some excellent golfing tips.

Most players hit their shots fat when dealing with a downhill lie. The reason is simple: your normal downswing angle isn't steep enough to avoid the ground behind the ball on a downslope.

Here's how you can fix that: Make a more sharply descending downswing. One challenge is that on a downslope, creating a steeper-than-normal downswing that produces solid contact with good club speed is difficult, especially if you don't consistently practice the technique.

Luckily, there's another way. It allows you to make your everyday swing, but with a few simple setup adjustments and a new wrinkle to your finish. Here are 8 golfing tips on how to do it:

1) Start by setting your shoulders parallel to the slope

2) Take a more lofted club to compensate for the decrease in shot height created by the downslope

3) Grip down a few inches on the shaft

4) Spread your feet to create an extra-wide stance (for better backswing balance) and play the ball two inches back from normal (to provide a margin of error against fat contact)

5) Keep your head still and maintain some of your weight on your back foot

6) On your downswing, allow gravity to help you swing through impact

7) Feel you weight move downhill as you turn through the shot

8) Step forward and walk down the hill to help re-establish your balance
