Math is a unique and an incomparable subject. This subject involves symbols, formulas, specific procedures, textbooks that look different, and many unique words and terms. Consequently, it is important to use study skills that utilizes particularly well to math. Here are some that you should use.
1. Read what the lecturer will be teaching on before you go to class
Read and interpret slowly. Speed reading techniques are not appropriate and not allowed. Every word and symbol is important to the meaning. Do not skip the symbolic part of the text. This is often the most important part. If you cannot understand or interpret a symbol, look in the glossary or in the first part of the text. Symbols are often explained when they are first introduced. If you still cannot find out what a symbol means, ASK. Read with a pencil in hand. If you do not understand the topic, try to formulate and create a question about the problem. If you can ask a particular question, you can answer it yourself. If you cannot answer it, you are able to recognize what part of the instructor's lecture needs your complete attention.
2. Understand the concepts.
Don't be contented with indefinable ideas about how to work problems. Do the examples yourself, understand the concept elaborated, and then attempt to create up your own examples. Store in mind that the questions on the exam may be very different from the examples in the textbook.
3. Practice.
Be sure you understand and translate the concepts before you do the drill. Exercises and practice will aid you to recall and give you confidence in your mastery. Push yourself to remember the methods and techniques as you work problems; don't look back in the book.
4. Keep up with assignments
The step is much easy in college and being updated with assignments and exercises help you to better understand what is going on in class.
Mathematics is not a spectator sport. The only way you can learn mathematics is by doing it. Here are some suggestions on how to arrive with the correct solutions and where to get the most out of the time spending on assignments.
a) Understand the purpose and intention of the homework. Assignments in mathematics classes is designated to help you understand certain concepts and to help you construct certain skills. Homework is not given to you because it is significant to get the right answers. Your instructor already knows the answers.
b) Try to understand the process, not the precise problem. Sort out problems in the assignment by problem type. Execute each assigned problem and then verify it in the back of the book. Try to work out why you failed the ones you did instead of just working toward the answer. The same problem may be on a test or quiz.
c) Label your homework problems you still do not understand and try to ask for help with them before the next class. The next topic may construct on a concept or skill you did not understand in the homework. When you get help, jot down notes on what you learned, so that you can study them for the test.
d) Before you close the book, look back over the assignment and try to justify to yourself what the assignment was about, what each kind of problem was given, how you got the answers and what the answers tell you. e) Keep your homework in an accessible and clean notebook so that you will be able to find questions or difficulties you have quickly and easily. This will also provide a priceless study guide for tests.
5. Ask questions.
Do not hesitate to ask or pop up questions. Ask your instructor for help after you have attempted to pull class notes and book explanations together for review and still don't understand. Jot down specific problems so you have them ready; don't be wispy and say you just don't understand.
6. Don't hesitate.
Ask for help right away. Tutoring sessions are available. The longer you wait before getting help, the more time consuming and the harder it will be to get caught up. Most of the time when you feel lost, it is just one concept that you are overlooking, so get help quickly. If you missed one concept in a math class it will make the rest of your math career difficult. Don't feel embarrassed to inquire questions and get help; even the best mathematicians have felt completely lost at some point.

Get help early in the semester before you get too lost.
For understanding, recite back the materials you have read in your math textbook.

Copy all the information that is written on the board.

If you miss a class, ask your instructors for permission to attend the same course that is taught at a different time or day.
