How To Install A Toilet
There are many reasons why you may want to learn how to install a toilet on your own
. Sometimes toilets can get cracked and leak water. Maybe your toilet just uses more water than you would prefer. You may even be thinking about replacing an ugly shade of color that no one has seen in twenty years. Contrary to popular belief you do not need to call a plumber to get this job done. Even with little to no plumbing knowledge you can learn how to install a toilet within a few hours.
Once you have removed your old toilet you will want to clean the area the best that you can. It is important that your area is clean because everything has to fit together tightly when you install your new toilet. For your waste pipe coming out of the floor (the one your toilet was sitting on) you will want to stuff this with an old rag to prevent fumes and gas from coming through in to your bathroom.
Now you should have two long bolts coming out of your flange around your hole in the floor. If these are broken or bent you will just replace them with new ones. Over each bolt you will now slip a brass washer. Now you're ready to install your wax ring (under $10). Carefully center your wax ring over your flange and gently press down.
For the next step you may need an assistant because toilets are generally pretty heavy. Unless yours is very light I don't suggest doing this part by yourself.
Life your toilet over your flange so that your two long bolts line up with the holes on the bottom of your toilet. You will want to slowly and carefully set your toilet down making sure that every thing is lined up. You don't want to twist or rock your toilet. Once your toilets been placed on top of your wax ring press it down so it is flush with the floor.
Put your nuts on your two long bolts and start them by hand. When you need to use a wrench be sure to alternate between both sides tightening a little bit at a time. If you make one too tight you could put stress on your toilet and they can easily crack or break. Then you are back at square one. Once they're both tight just use a hack saw and remove the remaining parts of the bolts sticking up. Be sure to leave a couple treads above your nut. Now place your plastic bolt cover.
