How To Keep Coloured Hair Looking Vibrant
Certain ingredients in shampoos can affect coloured hair
. Red tones are normally the ones that fade the quickest. Blondes are normally alright as once the hair is bleached it will stay that colour, although sometimes blonde hair can change to a yellowish tone after a few washes. Brown tones can fade lighter.
The ingredient that is contained in anti-dandruff shampoos can actually fade colour. The goal of anti-dandruff shampoos is to strip everything from the hair and scalp to remove any build up. If these shampoos are used regularly they'll eventually start to remove colour from the hair. If you find you suffer from a flaky scalp it is best to use a clinically tested shampoo that you will only need to use once a week, not every day, to remove any flakes from the scalp. In between washes a colour saving shampoo can then be used to revive the hair.
Blonde hair normally stays nice during the summer months because the sun naturally bleaches the hair. It is during the winter months that bleached hair can start to go dull. In this case using a shampoo containing ingredients that promote toners can be very effective to achieve that white, creamy tone. This will also give the hair shine, making it look healthy.
For red / darker shades the summer months aren't the best time for keeping the colour vibrant. Semi-permanent colours are best for mid-length hair and ends of hair as most of them contain conditioning agents. Because the sun naturally bleaches the hair, darker shades fade very quickly when exposed to the sun. Also, chlorinated water has a slight bleaching agent in it that can cause the colour to fade. The best way to prevent this is to use a leave-in conditioner which will keep the hair moisturised. If you use one that contains UVA and UVB filters then hair will be protected from the sun and your colour will last longer throughout the summer.
Another good way to keep your coloured hair vibrant is to not wash hair too often because the less hair is washed the more the colour will hold. A dry shampoo is a great way to stop the hair from looking greasy!
