How To Keep Your Butane Lighter Working
Caring for your lighter is of obvious importance
. No matter how much money you spent on that lighter (or didn't spend for that matter), keeping your lighter in good working order is essential to your smoking enjoyment. How do you care for a butane lighter? First, if you've opted for butane windproof lighters or even a standard butane lighter, you're ahead of the game. Lighter fluid based lighters can actually add chemical tastes to your cigars or pipe tobacco, whereas butane lighters will not. However, numerous things can happen during the life of your lighter and caring for it correctly will keep it from malfunctioning.
Fuel: The first order of business is to ensure that your lighter always has fuel in it. Check the sight glass (if so equipped) to determine how low that fuel is. Letting your lighter run out of fuel is a bad thing. Just as with your automobile, this will allow air and impurities to access the system. Keeping it full is important, whether you are using windproof lighters or standard lighters.
Cleaning: Fuel combustion of any type leaves behind carbon residue. You will find this as black deposits around the burner (or jet). Cleaning this carbon off will help keep your lighter working properly and ensure that it looks good, too. You can use a bit of alcohol and a cotton swab to clean the carbon from windproof lighters, as well as standard lighters. This ensures that the burner remains free and clear of debris.
Blocked Burners: One common issue with windproof lighters and other butane lighters is that the burner jet can become blocked. When this happens, you will not be able to use the lighter. To clear the debris, simply use a can of compressed air to blow any debris from the burner. If you notice black carbon deposits within the burner, use a cotton swab and clean it out, then use the compressed air to remove loose debris from the burner.
Correct Adjustment: Whether you prefer windproof lighters or standard lighters, you must ensure that the flame is adjusted properly. If the setting is too low or too high, you will not be able to light the lighter, no matter how much fuel you might have within the reservoir or how strong your spark might be. These corrections can be done quite easily, often by hand, without the need for any special tools.
