How To Keep Your Fence In Good Condition
Fencing is a useful tool for accomplishing a variety of tasks
, and while the most common usage has always been restricting or blocking the movement of people and animals across a certain boundary, fences have a number of other applications.
The way fencing can be used depends greatly on the material from which it is made, and these two factors will determine the type of maintenance required. Here, we'll take a brief look at some of the different types of fences, as well as how to maintain each type of fencing.
The most common materials from which fencing is made are iron, wood, chain link, and vinyl. Each type has unique advantages and disadvantages that make it more or less useful in a given application. Iron fences are generally used in residential areas and around other private structures, and are very sturdy.
They are easy to maintain because they are very resistant to damage, but if they are somehow damaged they can be very expensive to repair or replace. Iron is also resistant to weathering, but susceptible to corrosion, and if exposed to sea air it can rust over time. A coating of an anti-rusting agent can help prevent this.
Wooden fences are often used in residential areas, because they can be formed into solid barriers by placing the wooden panels very close together. Wooden fences are also quite sturdy, and are easier to repair when damaged than their iron counterparts.
While wood is not subject to corrosion, it can be warped and damaged by rain and sun. This can be prevented by a good coat of paint, but paint jobs will need to be replaced every few years or so. Wood fences should also be checked for termites periodically.
Chain link is resistant to both corrosion and weathering, and its flexibility makes it resistant to blunt force trauma. Chain link can be cut, such as with wire cutters or a blowtorch. Because it is often used in security applications, and because someone deliberate enough and with the right tools can damage it, chain link may need to be replaced entirely if it is damaged.
Fortunately, chain link is relatively cheap and easy to replace. Vinyl is such a good tool because it requires virtually no maintenance at all. It will not degrade due to adverse weather or sun, and because the color is digitally integrated into the fence it will not fade over time.
