How To Learn The Twi Language (Pt. 2)

Once you've started learning Twi and you've mastered the basic structures with at

least 500 words using Nkyea Twi Primer or any good Twi course of your choice, you can begin to read. Indeed, you must read, and read authentic material. Reading will challenge your knowledge, increase your Twi vocabulary and help you to learn more about the people and culture of Ghana.

Finding some Twi to read or listen to

Once you're started in the Twi language, you need to create some situations in which you want to use the language. This is easy for many languages, but it can be a bit difficult for Twi if you don't live in Ghana or have a spouse who speaks Twi. If you are in Ghana, what you can do is buy Twi books from the University of Ghana bookshop in Accra to read. As you are just starting out to read in Twi, I would recommend you get some children's storybooks. You can also watch Ghanaian movies in Twi, and listen to Twi radio programmes. If you are not in Ghana you can get theNkyea Twi Phrasebook for iPhone and try to meet people from Ghana through a church in your city. You may not be a Christian but getting hold of a Twi Bible will help you a great deal in reading. Did you know that you could listen to some local Ghanaian radio stations on the Internet? Most of their Twi programmes are about politics in Ghana and quite interesting to listen to.Peace FM has streaming programmes in Twi that you can listen to. You can also buy Ghanaian movies in Twi from a lot of Ghanaian owned shops. Most of these movies are very funny. You can also watch some of them for free on Youtube.

Reading in the Twi language

So, now that you have some Twi books, you need the right approach. Start with children's stories with simple words and sentences and begin to read them. Every time you find a word you don't understand, write it down on a blank flash card and look it up in theKasahorow online dictionary. You can miss some words if there are too many but if you look them up and don't write them, there is a high probability that the next time they show up in the text you will have to search them again. Words you find in children's books are most of the time used again in the book. This will help you with reinforcement. Once you've looked up and written words, you can read a lot more books. But remember that you have to write words down unless you want to look them up every time.

So you should first read a lot, and listen to radio programmes and when you hear a Twi word or phrase you don't understand then you can check its meaning in the Kasahorow online Twi dictionary or any good personal Twi dictionary.

At the same time you should go on with the method shown in the previous article, working regularly with Nkyea Twi Primer. Towards the end of the method, reading and understanding Twi will be easy for you.
