How To Load Your Motorcycle Onto A Trailer

Loading your motorcycle onto a trailer can be a dangerous activity if you don't go about it the right way. In order to have it go smoothly there are certain precautions that need to be taken. Here are a few tips about loading your motorcycle onto a trailer.

Remember, you're dealing with a machine that in most cases weighs three times more than you do, if not more. For this reason alone it is important that you take as many safety precautions as possible. Plus you also have to realize that you are handling a very expensive piece of equipment. The last thing you want to do is have your motorcycle tip over because extensive and expensive damage could occur.

The Trailer

Before you even try to load your motorcycle onto your trailer, make sure that the trailer is indeed hitched to your vehicle. This will help keep it from moving while you are trying to get the motorcycle onto it. Hook the trailer up and make sure the vehicle is parked securely.

Use Help

Loading a bike by yourself can be a strenuous task, especially when you consider how heavy the motorcycle is. Always consider using a few helping hands if they are available. This will help keep you from getting hurt by not having to try and load it by yourself.

Loading

Position the motorcycle according to where you would like it on the trailer once you roll it up onto it. This will eliminate the need to try and maneauver it into position once it is on the bed of the trailer.

With the bike in neutral and both hands on the handlebars, push the motorcycle up onto the trailer. Make sure you get enough momentum going so you can role the bike up without having to stop during the middle of the process. You don't want to stop with the motorcycle half on and half off of the trailer because it could tip over at this point. If you have people helping you, consider having a person on each side of the bike and one in back of it to help push it up onto the bed of the trailer.

Once the motorcycle is in place on the trailer, put the kick stand down temporarily so you can arrange your straps the way you would like them. If you have a front wheel stand, put the front tire of the motorcycle into the stand. This will help steady it while you get your straps ready.

Strap It Down

When ready, attach the first strap to the handle bar on one side of the motorcycle and tighten it down. Don't tighten the straps all the way until you have them all in place. Attach the next strap onto the other handlebar and then tighten it down as well. Place a third strap on the back end of the motorcycle so that the back end does not move from side to side. You can use two or more straps here as well if you want to.

When all straps are in place, the front tire is secured, and the motorcycle is standing in a vertical position, tighten down all straps so that the motorcycle is secured tightly to the trailer.
