How To Maintain Clean Drains

Cleaning drains at least once a month prevents sludge from accumulating around the inside of the pipe

. This can be done either with a factory manufactured cleaning product or a home made cleaning formula. Sludge develops as a result of pouring liquids with solid sediments that settle around the pipe slowing the flow or blocking it fully. One can save a lot of money in plumbing expenses if they know how to clean their drainage system.

It is necessary that you have the right tools for this job. You require a plunger to suck out blocking object. A plumber's snake will help you dislodge any fixed blocking objects. A closet auger helps one to clean the bend of toilet bowl and sinks. You will also need suitable drainage cleaner to clear loose dirt and odor. All these tools are available in hardware stores.

The plunger is the most common used tool in maintenance of drainage systems. A plunger is meant to suck up or in the least dislodge the blocking object and not for pushing the clog down the piping. The first step in using a plunger is to cover all the holes leading to the clogged drainage pipe. This ensures that the pressure applied through the plunger is not neutralized by air pressure.

Make sure the cup of the plunger covers the mouth of the pipe completely. To create the suction force required to dislodge the blocking object, press down the cup to a flat position. Pump the plunger continuously without lifting it from the mouth of the drainage pipe until the pipe is unblocked.

The process of unclogging a drainage pipe using an auger is meant to pull out the blocking object. The first step is to unscrew the elbow pipe to let out the trapped water. Then push the auger into the pipe until you encounter the resistance of the blocking mass. Push the cable a little further to get hold of the clog and engage clockwise and anticlockwise movements whenever you encounter resistance until the cable moves freely.

Preventing drainage pipes from clogging is a continuous exercise and not a one time exercise. Neglected drainage pipes are more likely to clog than regularly cleaned pipes. Debris and dirt settle on the inside of the pipes with time slowing the speed of flow through the pipe. The slow speed gives time for more of solid dirt to settled and eventually result in a clog.

Putting physical guards to prevent solid matter from getting into the drainage pipes also helps to avoid clogging. Make sure that all the drainage mouths have dirt screens to guard against any solid objects. The screens are likely to bet blocked with time and therefore the trapped waste should be removed promptly.

Use a good drainage cleaner clear odor that may emanate from drainage pipes. The cleaner also helps to dislodge thin layers of sludge developing in the inside of pipes. Cleaning the drains regularly to maintain a clear environment in your drainage.
