How To Maintain Your Kitchen Knives

It is important to keep you knives well-maintained to ensure it is durable

. Even the best grades of knives can wear, and if they are not maintained, they are no different from any cheap or lower grade knives. Hence, here is a guide to keeping your knives pristine.

First, you will need to have a proper place to store your knives. Use either a knife block or place it in a drawer, so that their blades will not be exposed to any possible damages. After each use, make sure your knives are well cleaned. Use a soapy cloth to clean the knife of the stains, and wash off with hot water. After that, remember to dry the blade with a clean cloth so that mould will not grow on them if it is not going to be used for some time. There is also a possibility of the knives rusting, especially if it is made out of carbon steel. For such knives, apply a layer of food-grade mineral oil on the blade to prevent rusting.

To maintain the sharpness of your knives, send them for knife sharpening. You can get some help from outside, or you can do it yourself. Knife sharpening is not very difficult if you learn the correct method of sharpening for the type of sharpener you have. Electric sharpeners are made easy to use nowadays as you will just need to slot it in and slide it out. More conventional ones require some technique you will need to follow or else you will damage the edges.

Another thing you should be aware of is that the type of cutting board surface can cause the knife to become blunt. The best boards to use are wooden and plastic ones, as they are not very hard as compared to ceramic or marble boards. Even better is if a soft paper was used as the surface.
