How To Make Health Affordable- A Must Read

The lack of coverage of a substantial part of the population of a country under the insurance umbrella has been a big problem with the authorities

. Despite sincere efforts in the past decade to include as many people as is possible under health insurance cover and despite commendable increase in the insurance coverage as a whole, a large part of the population still remains deprived of the health insurance benefits.

Many experts are of opinion that the high cost of insurance has prohibited many people from subscribing to insurance policies, thereby depriving them of the insurance cover.

In the last one decade especially, many private players have entered or forayed into insurance business. Insurance business has, as a result, evolved beyond the jurisdiction of the governmental authorities alone. With the private players entering, profit motive has made its debut big time.

The private insurance providers have tried to give the best solutions, as far as health insurance goes and have introduced millions of policies with millions of features and attractive returns.

However, most of these policies have come with a high price tag. As a result, after some time, these insurance policies have begun to be called the elite mens policies and they were dubbed as the rich peoples jurisdiction.

The developments have left many people, who are from the less privileged sections of the society, deprived from the benefits of health insurance. These people have moved away from health insurance in general because the premiums the insurance providers demanded were easily beyond the means of these people.

What was worst was that some people dropped out of a policy after subscribing because they could not sustain the payment of premium for a specific duration of time. As a result, the number of defaults and policy lapses increased and the overall scenario became grimmer.

What could be done to improve the situation? There is a need for a two pronged strategy. First, the private insurance providers need to realize their social commitments and tailor insurance policies, specifically for the people who are from the less privileged class of the society.

This is known as the cheap health insurance. This will enable many more people to enroll for the insurance policies and the affordable people will collectively push up the total coverage of the insurance in the medical sector, thereby improving the scenario.

Second, the government needs to get in as a lawmaker and a policy provider. The government could, as part of its social commitment drive, make policies that are affordable for the poor people. The government can also enact laws that will make it compulsory for companies not to deny anyone the affordable people benefits of insurance.
