How To Pass Your Driving Test - Independent Driving

On 4th October 2010 the latest change in the UK driving test came in to action

. The test has been changing ever since the first test back in the 1930s. Each of these changes has been brought in to try to keep the test relevant to the current day traffic conditions. These changes have included, or removed things like;

hand signals, starting on a hill, parking in a bay,

turning round in the road, going backwards round a corner,

going backwards, stopping as if in an emergency.

The latest change is titled "Independent Driving"

Until now the Test Examiner has been in control all the time during the test, telling the candidate where to go, what to do, when to do it. This has almost been like a driving lesson, with the small difference that the examiner didn't tell the pupils "How" to do something. Now it is going to be more realistic in that the candidate will be giving the chance to show the examiner that they can actually drive a car properly and safely. At some point during the test the examiner will tell the pupil that for the next 10 (approximately) minutes they should simply follow road signs towards a specific destination.eg "Follow the signs to Huddersfield". Also the examiner can instruct the candidate to go somewhere, following a diagram. Eg "Go to the end of this road, at the T junction turn left then at the 2nd roundabout turn right."

During this 10 minute period the examiner will simply observe what to test candidate actually does.

Thus the test candidate can demonstrate that they can drive independently, controlling the car and making decisions about how to drive the car, where to drive the car, and deal with traffic conditions found, for example, round the next corner!

It will be just like real life. Imagine, for example, that when you have passed your test you are ask to give a lift home to a friend, but you don't know where they live. They will tell you things like "At the end of the road turn left, then turn right at the second roundabout and then follow the signs to Huddersfield". Does that sound familiar?

My name is David Parry. I have been an ADI, (Approved Driving Instructor) since 1994, and since then I have been enjoying watching my pupils pass their driving tests. I am especially proud of the fact that nearly all of my pupils pass the test after fewer lessons than the national average as reported by the DSA. Thus my pupils spend less money on lessons than pupils who go to the National driving schools, or the local schools which advertise ridiculously low lesson prices, but which keep pupils on their books for years. On average my pupils are ready for the test after 15 to 20 lessons, depending on their ability.

I put this down to the fact that I have been an advanced driver myself since I passed the Institute of Advanced Motorist Test at the age of 20 and I have a great ability in making the whole process of controlling the car very simple. This means my pupils very quickly start to learn how to asses traffic conditions quickly, and thus become very safe drivers. I teach pupils how to be safe drivers, how to drive properly and also teach pupils how they have to drive to pass the driving test. I know what the examiners are looking for, so I can advise my pupils accordingly.

My website has been deliberately kept simple, because I hope you are looking for a good driving instructor..not a flashy website. Nor do I need to attract pupils by offering a range of fancy packages or discounts on prices. I don't need to.

I simply offer first class instruction at a reasonable price.

Of course I do offer the following; Theory Test tuition, PassPlus courses, Block Bookings, Motorway lessons, Lessons for nervous people who passed years ago but have never driven since,

Of course I pick my pupils up at a convenient place for them, be that at home or college, or at a good pick up point in town.......and then drop off where ever the pupil requires.

Good luck when you take your test, which now includes "Independent Driving"
