How To Pick A Catfish Fishing Rod
Fishing is one of the most popular sports of today
. Men, women and children fish for fun and sport. Some anglers fish professionally and compete for cash and prizes while others just enjoy spending an occasional weekend out on the water.
Regardless of what type of fisherman you are, you can have a better catfish fishing experience if you choose the right rod and reel for the job. It's more important than many anglers realize.
In order to make a good decision the first thing that you need to do is decide which catfish species you plan to go fishing for. This is important because you won't use the same rod and reel set-up for a channel catfish as you would for a blue catfish. The blue cat can grow much larger than the average channel and you need heavier equipment for them. If you're not sure which species you want to fish for you can always start with one outfit that is suited for the average size catfish.
Qualities of a Fishing Rod
The two things that you need to look for in a fishing rod is action and power. The action is how much a rod will bend when you are casting the line or when you have a fish dangling from the hook. There are four types of action rods that you need to take into consideration and they are listed below.
* Slow Action - A slow action rod will bend all the way to the handle from the tip and these have little force behind them when you cast your line.
* Medium Action - The last half of the rod will bend on these starting from the tip and running to the middle of the rod.
* Medium/Fast Action - The last third part of the rod will bend on these.
* Fast Action - The last quarter part of the rod will bend on these and they put the most amount of force possible behind your cast.
The power of a rod is determined by the size of the line and the weight of the lures it can handle. The heavier lures and line a rod can hold, the more power it is said to have.
How to Pick a Catfish Fishing Rod
When fishing for a channel catfish a medium power, medium action baitcasting rod would be a great choice. The baitcasting reel is an excellent piece of equipment that works very well for catfish fishing but it can be harder to use than the spinning reel so beginners may need to get a little experience before trying to use them. This is why the spinning reel is recommended for beginners.
