How To Plan A Halloween Treasure Hunt For All Ages

Halloween is one of the most anticipated times of the year

, by children and adults alike. In no other time of the year can you design and put on a scary but creative costume, decorate your homes with jack-o-lanterns and spooky floating ghosts, and walk around the neighborhood trick-or-treating. Yet if you are looking for more original ways to celebrate Halloween, why not host a scavenger hunt for your family and friends?

While celebrating Halloween dates back to centuries ago, more and more ways are being created to update the event and make it more fun. One such activity is the Halloween treasure hunt. In this game players are made to answer a series of clues which collectively lead them to other obstacles, bringing them closer to the ultimate treasure.

The types of treasure hunts you will plan would vary according to the age group that will partake in the game. Pumpkin treasure hunts are appropriate for toddlers and kids in primary school. Give the children a piece of paper with stickers of Halloween images like ghosts or vampires, and instruct them to look for pumpkins with matching stickers. Scatter your pumpkins around the lawn and fill each with candies and the stickers of matching images. Adding in more pumpkins to the hunt will make it slightly more challenging for the kids.

For kids in elementary school, a Halloween scavenger hunt involving riddles is a great way to exercise critical thinking while having fun. Write out riddles for children to answer, where the answers should lead to objects hiding more riddles. Cut out your paper into ghost figures and other fun Halloween shapes, and let the clues lead children to different areas of the house to make it more exciting. The last clue would lead kids to a treasure map to guide them to a treasure chest of goodies.

A scavenger hunt involving the entire neighborhood is a fun and challenging activity for teens. Assign certain themes to different teams, like vampires for one team and zombies for another. Then send them out into the neighborhood with a list of things to look for which are related to their theme. For example, the vampire team would search homes for garlic, a vampire cape, and a jar of blood. The first team to finish would be rewarded with gift certificates to a fun restaurant.

From these novel Halloween ideas, youll see that there are other ways to make the season even more exciting. You can even devise a Halloween scavenger hunt for adults by hiring actors to play ghouls in a real haunted house setting. Plant different tokens around the house and assign teams to search the ghoul-infested house of horror.
