There is a type of musical shorthand that has been developed by guitarists. Named tablature, it is sometimes called tabs. It is a very simple way to write tunes in a way that doesn't require the traditional knowledge of reading music. The six guitar strings are represented by a corresponding letters. Each string's letter, which is one of six, i. E., e, B, G, D, A, or E, is written in a six-line diagram when it is to be played.
Short lines, placed at intervals across the neck of the guitar, divide it into frets. The guitar strings are compressed in these areas to change the tones while the strings are strummed or plucked. In addition to the tab's string letter, a number is included to indicate the fret that should be held. The varied tones produce the melody.
