No matter how much care you take while handling your prescription glasses, they are bound to get scratched. Though it depends on the kind of scratch and how deep it is, there are ways to take care of the scratches before you have decided to permanently replace the pair.

Firstly, one must know what the surface is made of. One needs to check whether the surface is made of glass or plastic lenses with or without coating, because the approach will depend on the material of the surface. You can obtain a lens cleaner either from an optometrist or purchase it online. You need to try a metal polish and a soft cloth, rubbing in a circular pattern for about 5 minutes, depending on the severity of the scratches. You can apply it more than once, unless you achieve the desired result. Once you are finished, you need to rinse the pair in soap water to remove any residue. You can also drop a small amount of baby oil onto the lens and rub it with soft cloth, but this approach works best for minor scratches.

One can also try the method of applying a micro-abrasive eyeglass polish, toothpaste or furniture polish to both sides of clean eyeglass lenses, using your fingers. After giving some time to settle, using a soft cloth, you can buff the polish or toothpaste off of the lenses, until they are clean.

One must remember, however, that if your prescription glass has an anti-scratch or any other coating then you will need to polish off the entire coating.

The above mentioned steps are some of the ways you can polish off the scratches from your lenses. These methods generally work better when the scratches are minor.
