Tips To Catch Big Walleye

Every fisherman/woman has dreamed of landing that one-in-a-lifetime trophy walleye - myself included

. This is a dream that can actually be realized quite easily. There are more than 70,000 lakes, rivers, and reservoirs in Canada alone that contain walleye, and many of them are well over 10 pounds. That may seem like an extraordinary amount of water to fish, but you don't have to try them all to get your 'big one'. There are several tricks and tips to catch the monster you have been pining for, and do it in just one lake.

An Irresistible Lure - There is an old wives tale that isn't too far off from the truth when it comes to catching large fish. You simply need to use larger bait or lures. Most anglers will use the traditional sized lures, and sure, they are absolutely adequate in catching a large quantity to take home for dinner. However, if you use larger lures, this will eliminate strikes from smaller fish and entice larger ones.

Now that the size has been established, which lures are the best to use? Jigging is always a sure fire bet to land a walleye, especially if they are minnow shaped or combined with live (if permitted) or dead bait attached. It your jigs are scented, they will be even more enticing.

Other lures that have been proven to me effective in catching larger walleye are crank baits. The newest crank baits have flatter sides that give the lure more vibration and flash. This makes it more attractive to the walleye.

Spoons are effective, especially when ice fishing, because they mimic the movements of an injured fish. Walleye will take any opportunity for a meal, and an injured bait fish is prime opportunity.

Perhaps the most innovative lure on the market today is the biopulse lure. This is a lure that emits flashing lights, sounds, and a powerful scent that proves to be irresistible to walleye. I haven't tried this particular bait as of yet, but I would like to see if it is as good as the experts say.

Location, Location, Location - Now that we have our bait and lure at the ready, we need to decide exactly where to go. As I mentioned, any walleye stocked lake can potentially produce a trophy fish, but to better your odds, you should look for certain bodies of water.

If you are quite adventurous and willing to travel to find a well stocked lake, then you could head out to Ontario. Here, you will find the top two lakes in the world that hold the most number of walleye. In Northern Alberta, you will also find Lesser Slave Lake, which hosts the largest walleye fishing derby in the world every year. These are place where you can be sure that monster walleye lay in wait, but it can also be the downfall of your fishing trip.
