Having a difficult time potty training your puppy
? Having a lot of "accidents" in the house? Cheryl Boettger, a leading expert, is here to help. Here are a few easy steps on how to potty train your puppy more effectively.
The most important factor in the potty training process is consistency. The more dedication the owner exhibits, the more effective and prompt results will occur. The puppy will also begin to depend on the owner's level of consistency and this will form a healthy relationship of trust between the owner and the puppy.
Documentation is the next step in the process. You will want to keep a record of when your puppy successfully goes potty out side as well as times when your puppy has an "accident" in the house. When documenting, make note of the time and the behavioral pattern. This information will help you to develop a healthy schedule for your pet.
Puppies take well to a set schedule of times to go outside to go potty. The repetitiveness of a schedule will help your puppy minimize "accidents" in your house. A good way to set a schedule up is to a pick a time in the morning to take the puppy outside. The first time of the day should be when the puppy first wakes from sleep. You may also wake the puppy from sleep yourself in order to begin getting them used to the schedule. After that initial trip outside, you should take your puppy out at two to three hour intervals following, depending on your puppy's needs.
A puppy will normally need to go outside every few hours. The amount of time between these trips outside will lengthen as the puppy grows older. Some key times that your puppy may need to go outside are first thing in the morning, right before bedtime and shortly after eating and drinking.
The final step in the process is to observe and document your puppy's eating and drinking patterns. Withing thirty to sixty minutes of eating or drinking, you should offer the puppy an opportunity to go outside. You will also want to remember to take up the puppy's food and water one hour prior to the time they go to bed. This will prevent any accidents during the night.
