How To Prevent Dry Eyes Caused By Computer Use
In this modern day and age, many of us rely on computers and the Internet for many things such as to earn a living or to get our work done
. And why not? The World Wide Web is an endless source of information for knowledge and research purposes; it contains millions of websites that are being managed by individuals and organisations for business, entertainment, and for personal purposes. With the Internet, you can earn a living, reach out to people you care about, or even just to pass the time away. Indeed, you can do so many things using this information superhighway.
However, even though the benefits of computers and the Internet far exceed the disadvantages, these are still something we need to address. One of the downsides of relying too much on these technological breakthroughs is health issues. You see, when you are spending a lot of time in front of your computer, this will cause some negative effects on your health.
You will probably suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome which is characterised by the numbing of your hands, in addition to having painful wrists and fingers. But usually, people suffer more from dry eyes with excessive computer use. This eye condition will result in burning and painful sensations in the eye, discharges, blurring of vision, redness, and itchiness. When people have this condition, it becomes a very uncomfortable situation for them.
If you do not want to develop dry eyes, or if you are currently diagnosed with it and want to find effective ways to get rid of the condition, here are some recommendations for you.
1. Do not forget to blink! A lot of people who are working on their computers often stare at the monitor for long periods of time and this lessens the blinking frequency. Blinking is necessary so as to allow the eye glands to secrete liquid to moisturise your eyes.
2. Take frequent breaks. We are not talking about coffee breaks and lunch breaks. Instead, take a 30-second break every twenty minutes. You can stand up and stretch yourself, or you can simply direct your gaze at things located several metres away from you. A good idea would be to stare at green-coloured items for a few seconds as this colour is refreshing to the eyes.
3. Do not keep your monitor too bright. You need to adjust your computer settings and make sure the screen is not too bright because this affects your eyesight and can irritate it more. Dimmer monitors are more preferred than brightly lit ones.
4. Limit computer use. This is a no-brainer and yet not many people can seem to follow it. Try to do your work without relying on your computer too much. For amusement, how about engaging in real sports activities for a change, instead of playing online games all the time? You can also go out and spend time with friends instead of chatting through instant messengers.
If your eyes do not get better even after following the aforementioned tips for at least a week, it is best to consult an eye doctor. Alternatively, you may purchase over-the-counter eye drops and ointments to treat dry eyes.
