How To Properly Maintain Chicken Coops

Chickens like all other animals need to feel safe and comfortable in the place they live in

. They also need to be fed and given water regularly to help them grow and lay eggs. While chicken farmers before allow their poultry to roam around their farm to find food returning to the coop only before the sun sets, today chickens are almost always kept inside the safety of the chicken coop. Here are some helpful tips on chicken coop maintenance.

How To Care For The Chickens:

Chickens must regularly be given food and water for sustenance. You must provide them with enough nutrients for them to become healthy and lay a large number of eggs. Choose feeds that have high nutritional value no matter the cost because you can get back the amount you spent for their food when they yield good quality eggs. Rather than just flinging feeds carelessly on the ground, it will help you save if the chicken feeds are placed inside a tray. It will also be neater and more convenient for both the chickens and you.

While it is fun to scatter feeds on the grounds and let the chickens scamper to get it, placing the feeds in a container or tray is better to avoid wasting the feeds. Cleanliness is a must in chicken coop maintenance. The food trays and water containers must be cleaned frequently. Ensuring the chickens safety is also a big concern in coop maintenance. They must not be able to get out of the coop so it must always be checked for holes. Predators might also be able to get in and harm the chickens if there is an opening in the coop.

Proper Coop Cleaning:

Every day the chickens eliminate wastes from their system and this will accumulate in the coop. Cleaning the wastes is an essential part of coop maintenance. If you have chickens in the hundreds, then you must clean the coop and take away the chicken droppings as often as possible.

Chicken droppings are good fertilizers that you can use for your garden and plants. It is all natural and is a lot healthier to use than chemical fertilizers. Collecting the eggs that your chickens lay is one task that is very enjoyable and you should never miss. If the eggs are left in the coop, they might turn bad so regularly gather the eggs and keep them fresh by cooling them in the refrigerator.

How to Make Repairs:

Every loose board must be reattached and every hole must be covered to make your coop a safe haven for your chickens.
