How To Put Rythym In Your Backswing & Downswing
How To Put Rythym In Your Backswing & Downswing
Whether you have a fast swing or slow, all the stages of the swing should be blended together in one continuous movement. This smooth swinging of the golf club is called rhythm. You must learn how to train rhythm in your backswing and downswing to be able to hit long, consistent powerful shots.
You may have someone say 'he has good tempo in the swing' but what is the difference between rhythm and tempo?
Your overall tempo can be fast or slow but if the swing is jerky then you won't be exhibiting good rhythm and won't hit very many good shots.
The biggest problem associated with rhythm is the change in direction from backswing to downswing. This comes about because we frequently refer to the swing being in two pieces - a backswing and a downswing when really they should be treated as a single movement. The problem is further compounded by the fact that many golfers try and kill the golf ball from the top of the backswing and rush what should be a smooth transition.
If you suffer with inconsistency in your round where you tend to hit a lot of good shots, but spoil your performance with the odd nightmare then it could be that you swing technique is generally very good but your rhythm can be inconsistent.
The golf swing should be a chain reaction with one good move leading to another. When taught the swing is often broken down in to several movements but really should be thought of as one total sequence.
Breaking the swing down in to manageable chunks should be reserved for the practice area or in front of a mirror where no golf ball is involved. You should practice the individual parts of the swing until they become second nature so that when you do make a golf swing they link together as a fluid motion from start to finish.
To put rhythm in to your backswing and downswing you need to be relaxed at address. When practicing, try to work to a rhythm or a beat just like a metronome. Pace yourself and think of your swing as a one-two motion. Say the words aloud as you swing and make 'one' your backswing and change in direction to the downswing and 'two' your movement through the ball to a controlled finish.
You can come up with you own signals to measure your rhythm such as back-through or turn-turn. Use whatever works best for you. It's very simple but almost singing these words is a great way to improve your overall rhythm.
Practice swinging the club with your eyes closed along to your sing-song rhythm. Try to feel the weight of the club gather acceleration from the top of your downswing and then try to recreate the same feeling out on the golf course.
Follow this simple method to put rhythm in your backswing and downswing and see how your consistency improves - even you bad shots will be a whole lot better!
