Salem, also called the Steel City, is situated in the southern state of Tamil Nadu at a distance of about 200 kilometers from Bangalore. Salem is well-connected to all parts of Tamil Nadu and rest of India via road and rail. Salem is the transit location for popular tourist destinations like Yercaud hills, Kiliyur falls and Kavery peak, which are some famous attractions located nearby. Salem is also well known for its delicious Mangoes. The town is surrounded by hills on all sides and is intersected by the river Thirumanimuthar. The fort area is the oldest part of Salem town.

Reaching from Bangalore to Salem is very easy as both these cities enjoy great connectivity. There are direct train services that connect both these cities. Many Express trains ply daily from Bangalore to Salem, at regular intervals. Travelling by train is the best means to reach Salem from Bangalore. One can board trains from Yeshvantpur Junction (YPR), Bangalore City Junction (SBC) and Krishnarajapurm (KJM) stations to travel from Bangalore to Salem. Kongu Express (12648), Ernakulam Express (12677), Trivandram Express (16331), Nagarcoil Express (16339), Kochuveli Express (02777), Coimbatore Express (16613), Ernakulam Superfast Express (12684), Kochuveli Express (16315) and Puducherry Express (12255) are some of the trains that connect both these places.

The distance between these two cities is about 200 kilometers and it takes around four hours to reach from Bangalore to Salem by road. So, buses are also good option for traveling to Salem from Bangalore. Both KSRTC and private operators run services to Salem from Bangalore for different rates. 2 X 2 Semi Sleeper Non A/C, 2 + 1 Non A/C, 2 X 2 Coach, 2 X 2 Volvo, 2+2 Semi Sleeper Air Bus and A/C Volvo are the different categories of buses plying from Bangalore to Salem. Journey by bus is generally recommended to solo travelers and youth.

Another option is of travel is to hire Taxis to travel from Bangalore to Salem. Hiring a cab will cost more than INR 5,000 for a round trip. This mode of transport is suggested while travelling with family or in a group. Though there are airports in both Bangalore and Salem, currently there are no flights connecting them and hence air travel is not a viable option at present.
