It is believed that Lord Lakshmana cut off the nose of Surpanakha in Nashik. Therefore this place is named as Nasik which means nose. Panchvati is a place here which is also referred in Ramayana. Kumbhmela is celebrated here once in every 12 years. Ramkundis situated in Panchvati and the water of this tank has curative powers.
