Nashik, a pilgrim city, is located in the northwest part of the state of Maharashtra

. Nasik, also called Wine Capital of India", is a rapidly growing metropolitan city. Situated in the Western Ghats, on the banks of River Godavari, Nashik is referred in the epic Ramayana. Nashik was ruled by the Mughals and the British. Nashik contributes a lot to the independence struggle of India against the British. Independence fighters like Veer Savarkar and AnantLaxmanKanhere were born in Nashik. The city houses many temples, archeological sites of Stone Age and museums.

According to some legend, Lord Rama spent his exile period of 14 years in Tapovan in Nashik with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana. It is believed that Lord Lakshmana cut off the nose of Surpanakha in Nashik. Therefore this place is named as Nasik which means nose. Panchvati is a place here which is also referred in Ramayana. Kumbhmela is celebrated here once in every 12 years. Ramkundis situated in Panchvati and the water of this tank has curative powers.
