How To Remove Distractions To Success
Knowing how to perform efficiently under pressure is a vital skill that is necessary for the achievement of any goal
. Successfully cultivating this skill will ensure that you do not disintegrate when the pressure builds while allowing you to give your 100% best all the time. One of the primary ways of operating in peak mode is getting rid of distractions and focusing strongly on the task at hand.
Distractions lead to procrastination, procrastination leads to non-performance, which in turn results in the non-achievement of goals. To get a better idea of the impact of distraction on performance, examine the performance / focus relationship below:
Performance = Planning + Focus Distraction
The relationship above holds that the quality of your performance is directly influenced by the amount of planning or strategy that precedes any action, the amount of focus you apply and by the number of distractions that get in the way. Therefore to improve your performance, you essentially need to spend a great deal of time planning exactly how you are going to get there or achieve that goal, you need to apply laser-like and intense focus to the goal or the task and finally you must eliminate all unnecessary distractions that get in the way.
These distractions are the diversions that sidetrack you and make it difficult to perform efficiently, operate at your full potential and achieve your intended goal. To maintain a powerful focus on any objective and minimise distractions, you need to make a list of all such possible distractions and evaluate how much they are costing you in terms of achieving your goals.
Then ask your self if its really worth it. Years ago, before I truly grasped this mindset, one of my major distractions was movies. After having worked 10 or 12 hour day, I would spend the next few hours watching DVDs till late at night. I justified this in my own mind by saying that I deserved it and it was my downtime. While it is imperative that one gets some downtime in order to rejuvenate, it is likewise imperative to do everything within reason. I ended up spending 3 to 4 hours a day watching 2 sometimes 3 DVDS and sleeping late at night.
This turned into a bad habit the consequences of which were: firstly, I was always behind schedule and had to carry over deadlines to the next day and after; secondly because I slept late, I was always exhausted the next morning and required gallons of coffee to get me going (which really wasnt really great for my health) and finally as I was always behind schedule, I always had this constant lingering feeling of stress. Now, because it was just 3 to 4 hours a day and didnt seem like much, it was easy to justify until this distraction became an entrenched habit - I would be unable to sleep until I had watched at least one DVD before going to bed. This carried on for a couple of years until I did some soul searching and concluded that I was not attaining the level of achievement that I truly desired simply because my time was not being wisely spent.
By taking stock of the situation I realised the following: 3 hours of watching DVDs daily (and sometimes longer on weekends) meant that I was spending between 21 and 24 hours a week in front of the TV. That basically meant that I lost a whole day out of my week just watching movies! This in turn meant that in a month I was spending 4 WHOLE DAYS doing sweet nothing; and in a year, I spent approximately 48 days (about a month and a half) just sitting in front of the TV.
Thats ALOT of wasted time. Not only did this cost me precious time I could never get back but it also cost me a lot of money (thousands of rands in hiring DVDs and late fines) which could have been better invested. However, once I clarified in my own mind what I wanted to achieve and who I needed to be to achieve those goals, I came to the full understanding this distraction was one of the habits I would need to let go off in order to get to where I needed to be. While it felt really nice to just sit back, escape and drift away in front of the TV, the cost far outweighed the benefits.
By eliminating this distraction, I went to bed earlier and started my day much earlier (which in turn meant that I got a lot more achieved during the day); my body got the much needed rest it deserved thus making me a lot more focused, I utilised my time more effectively and was able to achieve my goals much faster.
Always remember, everyone gets the same numbers of hours in a day, however how they choose to use it is manifested in varying degrees of successes and failures that we observe around us.
