How To Restore The Old Tile In Your Spanish Villas

Many of the older Spanish villas that you will find throughout the country will be decorated with traditional tile floors and even walls

. Tile was a very popular material to use in Spanish villas and all throughout the Mediterranean because it keeps cool in the heat. Tiles have been used in Spanish homes for hundreds of years, and traces of tile work can still be seen in many ancient sites.

If you have purchased one of the older Spanish villas, you might find that the beautiful original tiles inside the house are still intact, but they are in need of cleaning or repair. Tiles are quite hard and long lasting, but they can weather over time and become cracked and dingy. If you can restore your tiles in your Spanish home, they will be a beautiful and practical feature and will last a long time. Here are some tips for restoring the old tiles in Spanish villas:

Replacing Broken Tiles

The first step is to take a close look at your tile floor or wall for any broken or damaged tiles. These tiles can be taken out and replaced, without affecting the rest of the floor. To do this, you will need to be able to find the exact same type of tile that was used on the floor. If the floor is antique, the tile might need to be specially ordered to match those found in Spanish villas.

To remove a tile, you can carefully heat it with a propane torch and a flame-spreader nozzle, which will heat up the adhesive so that you can carefully lift it out. Be careful not to damage the surrounding tiles when doing this. You can use a paint scraper or a putty knife to slowly pry the damaged tile up from the floor. Once you have removed a damaged tile, you will also need to scrape the old adhesive from the floor to make a clean base for a new tile. If you have accidently gouged the tile base, dont worry. This can be fixed with wood-filler and left to dry.

When you are placing in the new tile, you might need to sand the edges so that it fits perfectly into the hole left by the broken one. Warm the new tile with a clothing iron, which will make it more flexible, and then carefully place it into the hole.

Cleaning

Once all of your broken tiles have been replaced, you will need to thoroughly clean your floors so that they look beautiful. There are specific cleaning products on the market designed for tile flooring, such as Tile Doctor, so make sure that you are using one of these so that you dont do damage to your tiles. Clean the surfaces of the tiles with a mop, and when you need to get the dirt which is in between the tiles in the grout, you can scrub away with a toothbrush.

Many Spanish villas will have traditional tiled floors, and if you can restore yours to its former glory your holiday home will look amazing.
