How To Save Money While Using Your Air Conditioning System
Staying cool on hot summer days can also create gaping holes in our pockets
. But there are some tips and tricks that you can follow on how to stay cool while you let your ACs run at peak performance without going bankrupt.
1. Air filters - they should always be kept clean. Typically, air filters are cleaned once a month or once every 3 months depending on the house. For example, if you have a lot of pets residing in your house, you should clean it more often.
2. Condenser coil - the outside condenser coil must be washed and cleaned at least once a year. If you see a small copper pipe line being exposed, and hot to touch, then it's a sign that the condenser coil is dirty. A dirty condenser coil will make your AC system run hot and in the process making it more inefficient.
3. The lower levels of the house are usually cooler than the upper levels. What you need to do is to cut off a few vent registers. Make sure that you don't completely close them. This way, the static air pressure will not be disrupted. However, all the vent registers in the upper floors must remain open.
4. People tend to turn off their air conditioning system when they leave the house hoping to save energy. But this is not what really happens. When you turn off your AC, there is a latent build up of heat in the walls and furniture inside your house. So, when you turn it on again, your system will work harder to remove the heat accommodated by your house. Not only will it work harder, it will harder for a long time. So instead of turning it off, make sure that you just leave it to 5 or 10 degrees.
5. Avoid turning off and turning on the AC within 5 minutes or less. This habit can break your compressor, breakers and even blow fuses. Try to have a time-delay installed on your system as this will be very handy during blackouts. There are systems out there with built-in time-delay.
6. Make sure that every opening in your house are closed. This means that your blinds, curtains, doors and shades are closed. Then, make sure that your ceilings and floors are properly insulated. This way, cool air will not escape from your house. Once this happens, your system will work harder and eat up a lot of energy.
