How To Seal A Wood Fence

It can be tempting to avoid using sealant on your wooden fence

. After all, wood seems sturdy, so it is easy to mistakenly assume that it will be fine on its own. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Wooden fences are vulnerable to many things, including water damage, dry rot, and insects.

Applying sealant to your wooden fence will make a noticeable difference in how well your fence holds up over time against these and other, particularly if you plan to have your fence last for years. Fortunately for you, sealing a fence is a straightforward process.

First, you will need to select a sealant for your fence. There are many varieties to choose from, most of which will work just fine, but a few of which will not be appropriate for this particular job. Make sure you select a sealant that is designed specifically for outdoor use on wood. Additionally, be sure of the sealant's appearance.

Check whether it is colored or clear carefully, as you do not want to be surprised. If possible, request a free sample and use it on a piece of scrap material from your fence to be sure of its appearance.

Now that you have selected a sealant, you will need to apply it to your fence. Use a wide paintbrush to do this. Paint the sealant onto your fence with the grain of the wood, never against it.

Blend the edges of your strokes together before they dry. Because you need to apply an even coat, it is important that you do not stop halfway through one board to come back later. If you need to take a break, finish one board completely and come back to work on the next one. In this way, you can avoid streaks or dark spots.

After applying your sealant of choice, wait for it to dry. The amount of time this takes will depend on the brand. Check your packaging carefully to avoid damaging the seal you have created. Once it has dried completely, you may want to apply another coat.

This will vary based on how dark the stain is, and how few coats your particular brand of sealant requires to be effective. Again, check your package if you have any questions in this area, as individual brands will vary. Your type of sealant for your wooden fence may require many coats to be effective, or possibly only one will be required.
