How To Set Fitness Goals

Any big thing that you embark on in life needs to have a plan

, or a clear-cut idea of where you want to go and how you are going to get there. The same goes for your fitness. You need to clarify why you want to get fit and how you are going to do it. It may be because you can't keep up with your kids. Maybe you can't fit into your favorite clothes anymore. Whatever the reason, make sure you're doing this for yourself, not to please anyone else.

After you figure out what your fitness starting point is it is time to start setting goals. Research has shown that setting goals work. In one particular study scientist gave one group of exercisers a specific goal, such as doing 100 pushups. Another group of exercisers was just told, "Do your best." The first group that had specific measurable goals tended to have more success overall compared to the second group.

When you start an exercise program, you need to set different types of goals. You need to be able to look at the big picture, or long-term goals. In order to achieve the long-term goals you need to set a series of mini-goals known as short-term goals.

Long-term are things that you want to achieve in the next three to six months. First of all, you need to make sure that these goals are realistic. If you just started swimming today, do you believe that swimming the English Channel in three months is realistic? On the other hand, don't be afraid to dream. These dreams are the things that will keep you going when it gets tough. These things may seem to be out of reach at the moment, but that doesn't always mean that they will be. Judge for yourself when trying to figure out what is realistic and attainable within a three to six month period, you know you better than anyone else. Some people rise to the occasion when they are faced with what may seem impossible. Other people may get discouraged when setting the same exact goal, but everyone is different. In the beginning it is recommended to set moderately challenging goals. If you reach your long-term goals well ahead of schedule, choose more ambitious ones.


In order to achieve your long-term goals, you will need to set short-term goals. Short-term goals are the smaller steps that you will need to take in order to achieve you big goal. If you are unsure of the steps that you will need to take in order to achieve your goal, ask some that has done what you want to do and how they did it. Odds are they can tell you in simple terms how they achieved what you are looking to achieve.
