How To Set-Up Properly
One of the most crucial steps you can take to hit a good quality golf shot
, is to set-up properly. If you are not in the proper position at address, you will more than likely hit a poor shot.
Many golfers fail to remember this fact when trying to correct a swing problem. The set-up is part of the basic golf mechanics and should be worked on, like with any other part of your game.
When you address the ball properly you permit yourself to be able to coil and uncoil, due to the fact that you are more balanced. Your accuracy and power will increase, when you are balanced throughout your swing. More power equals longer shot.
Want to know how to set-up correctly? We will go over the basic set-up now. Your feet should be a couple of inches wider than shoulder width apart, if you are hitting your long irons or woods. For mid irons your feet should be shoulder width apart. When hitting your short irons, your stance needs to be 2" narrower than shoulder width apart. Practice hitting balls with each of your clubs, and adjust your stance accordingly. You may need to correct your stance slightly to get the proper feel.
Your front foot should angle a little towards your target. This will permit your shoulders and hips to fully turn. Your lag foot needs to be square to the target. Your knees need to be flexed and you should be bent over slightly from the hips. If done correctly, your shoulders and arms will form a triangle, and your elbows should point at your hips.
As you set-up, be sure that your shoulders and hips are in line with the target. This will give you the best chance to hit the golf ball where you are aiming.
To hit the shots you need to consistently, ball placement is crucial. You will need to modify the placement of the ball in your stance, depending on which club you are using. The ball will be placed further back in your stance, for the shorter clubs.
When you are using the driver, position the ball forward 3 ball widths in your stance.
The ball should be placed 2 ball widths forward in your stance, when using your fairway woods and long irons.
Middle irons: The ball should be placed 1 ball width forward from center.
The ball should be position in the center of your stance when using your short irons or wedges.
You may need to play with these ball placements, to find the right position for your game. You will have to practice and take your time finding the proper placement. The key here is to find what will work best for you.
Placing your weight on the balls of your feet will help keep you balanced. If you are on your heels you will not be balanced when you swing. You need to be balanced throughout your swing to strike the ball solidly and drive it in the way and distance you are striving for.
You can work with the golf pro at your local golf shop, to improve your stance. You can have a friend or playing partner film you, so you can visually see how you are setting up, and see what you need to modify to get your stance right.
