How To Set Up Your Fence Correctly

Fencing is a useful tool for a number of different applications

, and depending on the material from which it is made and how it will be used, will require a different method for setup. The most common materials for fencing are iron, wood, chain link, and vinyl.

Each of these materials has a different set of advantages that makes them ideal for a given scenario, and knowing how to install the appropriate types of fencing is important for ensuring the fence stands the test of time. Here, we'll go over how to install fences made from different materials, and how to ensure that they are set up to last.

Iron fencing is probably the most difficult to install, and unless you have experience you may want to get a professional to do it for you. Some iron fences are set up so that the cross beams, which hold the upright parts of the fence in place, are connected to stone pillars or other large constructions.

This is easiest if the reinforced upright sections are set in concrete foundations or other very sturdy object, which typically go in first, because the iron fence will be heavy and need a lot of support.

Wooden fences can be installed by digging square holes and installing the main stakes in these, usually reinforcing the foundation with a layer of concrete. The cross beams are then attached to the upright panels, and hoisted up to be fitted to the main stakes.

The easiest way to do this is to have the cross beam sections overlap the main stakes, and to attach them by nailing or screwing them in from the front. When done correctly, from back to front, you should have a main stake, then a cross beam, then the upright panels in front of that.

Chain link is a popular type of fencing because it is generally very easy to install. Mobile chain link fences can be mounted on aluminum or steel stands, with the upright rods and fencing simply placed into them. For a more durable fence that will not be moved, the rods should be placed into wet concrete foundations.

Vinyl fencing is used in much the same way, although when used in landscaping and agriculture it can be attached to wooden stakes and hammered into the ground. Vinyl is a popular temporary solution for outdoor work in rural and agricultural applications.
