How To Ship Internationally

For the most part, we know what to do when we mail things within the United States

. We are familiar with the postal service and we typically know how to mail items to others within the states. The correct way to label and package items for shipment is standard procedure and if we do run into problems, we know how to get help.

Mailing internationally, however, can be more of a challenge. Other countries have totally different regulations and so it can be difficult to know how to ship correctly. When shipping overseas, it's always a good idea to check with qualified shipping companies so that your items won't be declined, returned to you or lost.

Some countries are extremely particular about what they will allow from foreign places. While most items are acceptable, be sure to check and bear in mind that alcohol, prescription drugs, weapons, chemicals and hazardous materials are never allowed. If you are unsure, be sure to check first.

If you are mailing packages, they need to be in sturdy boxes. All items should be wrapped carefully and any extra spaces inside the box should be filled with padding of some sort. Shipments that go internationally often change carriers quite frequently throughout the route Therefore, the chances of loss or damage is definitely increased. You should seal the box with strong shipping tape and secure all seams with the tape as well.

A label should be placed on two sides of the box that show both the forwarding and return addresses. In addition, place a label inside the box in case the outside labels should fall off. These boxes are often placed on skids and they can get knocked around a bit. It's also best to use waterproof ink in case of moisture. The package should be addressed to a specific person and the destination country should be clearly marked. This will help prevent it from getting lost in transit.

Most shipping companies now allow you to check on the package through your assigned tracking number. By visiting the website of the shipping company, you should be able to easily track the package. From the website, you should be able to check when the item was shipped out, the current location and an estimated date of delivery.

It's good to let the recipient know the approximate date of delivery so they will be expecting the package. It's possible that they will need to pick up the package at their own postal area in order to sign for the delivery. They need to let you know when they receive the package as well as the condition of the items after the box is opened so you can know that there was no damage.

Shipping internationally is not difficult, but there are a different set of rules involved. Once you have gone through the process one or two times, you will know exactly how to proceed. Take your time preparing your packages, double-check the address and before you know it, you will be able to ship internationally without a second thought!
