How To Stain A Fence

Wood fences require maintenance, including staining and painting every few years

. Staining a fence helps keep the wood healthy and protects it from the elements. There are many stain colors to choose from which can add to the curb appeal of your home. The first step in any home project is to set aside the time for the project and prepare. Proper preparation leads to a successful project.

1. Plan: Before you make your plans, check the weather forecast. If there is rain in the forecast during the next 48 hours then youll need to select another time to stain your fence.

2. Method: There are several ways to stain a fence: with a brush, with a roller or with a spray gun. A spray gun is quicker but not as exact as doing it by hand with a brush or roller.

3. Protect: Place tarps, drop cloths or plywood above the grass and around the area where youll be staining the fence.

4. Inspect: Inspect the fence for weak or rotten boards.

5. Wash: Wash the fence with a hose with a power nozzle or power washer or a hose with a power nozzle. Use a brush, soap and water to remove ay additional dirt.

6. Bleach It: If the fence has mold growth, clean it with bleach. Mix equal amounts of bleach and water in a bucket, dip a brush in the bleach and scrub the fence. Alternatively, place the water and bleach in a spray bottle and spray directly onto the fence.

7. Waterproof It: Once the fence has dried, apply a waterproof sealant.

8. Protective Gear: As with any project, protect yourself by wearing protective gear. Wear a mask, protective goggles and gloves.

9. Scrape and sand.

10. Test Stain: Stain a small area on the corner of the fence to test the stain color.

11. Stain: Apply the stain in the direction of the grain. Use short and even strokes. More than one coat is usually needed. You may need to apply up to three coats.

12. Seal: Apply a sealer to protect the stain.
