How To Stop Labradors From Peeing Inside by:Lea Mullins

Labradors, along with most other breeds sometimes have a tendency to pee indoors

. This could be one of a few reasons but the main two reasons are either they have not been fully house trained as a puppy and couldn't or didn't want to go outside, or they may be urinating, marking their scent about the house.

So if you find puddles of urine on the floor then general toilet training is what you'll need to teach your Labrador. Take them outside a number of times a day to encourage them to urinate outdoors. Praise them when they pee in the correct place. It you catch them in the act you can make a noise with a shaker to distract them and say 'No' firmly and escort them outdoors to give them a chance to finish outside. It will take some time, patience and consistency to break bad habits or instill new ones. Encourage good behavior and they will catch on soon enough as these breeds love to please their owners.

Urine marking and wanting to pee are two different things and should be dealt with a bit differently too as there is generally a meaning as to why they might mark indoors.

It has been suggested that if you neuter or spay your Labrador from a young age they do not mark in the house. Some studies say this isn't guaranteed especially if it was already a habit before but it may be easier to break the habit if they neutered or spayed.

Males are more likely to mark urinate than females but generally around the time females are on heat or before they do, so mark to advertise their availability to others. Sometimes dominant females may mark too. If you have more than one dog that may also cause competition between them of what belongs to them. Marking is predominantly to show certain items belong to them, this could even be you. Dogs mark mainly upright objects or surfaces and sometimes at something that is new into the house which they might perceive as a threat or feel insecure to them in some cases.

Some ways to stop or prevent your Labrador are, neutering / spaying at a young age, catch them in the act - so supervising is a must they learn quickly with firm commands, limit access of certain rooms of the house, use distractions when catching them lifting their leg - like shaker bottles and using firm commands, praise them when they pee where you want them too. For some dogs deterrents or confinement is the only answer to stop this habit. When cleaning areas where they have urinated use vinegar and water instead of ammonia as this product smells similar to urine and they will use this smell as the correct location to re-offend.

Remember your Labrador loves to please you so when training them to pee where you want them too, use praise and attention as well as being firm and consistent. Catching them in the act will help stop them quickly or perhaps de-sexing them as puppies may also prevent this behavior from occurring.
