The most common cause for stress eating is when one feels everything in their life is falling apart and the eating is the only thing that is in their control and something they can do when they wish. One should not confuse stress eating wit overstuffing yourself with a Christmas or Thanksgiving feast.

The main problem with stress eating is, not only do we stuff our body with the extra food that it doesnt need but also our so called comfort food tends to be high in calories, eventually leading to obesity and other health problems.

Anything can trigger stress in us, some are easily recognisable like health problems or financial pressure or any personal problems, but there are few other triggers like planning a wedding or starting a new job etc that contribute equally in triggering stress eating. While we are going through a roller coaster ride emotionally we look for some control and grabbing something to munch on is our first instinct. So how do we get a control on this uncontrollable controlled eating?

Once you recognise and admit on being a stress eater, first find the route cause of stress and tackle that. Before you extend your hands to grab something to munch, ask yourself if you are really hungry or are you looking for a distraction.All you need to do first is get a control over the urge to eat every time you are stressed, for that you'll have to replace eating with any other activities that will help you better.


Exercise and Meditation is a good alternative, you may initially find it tough to squeeze in exercise with your stress'ful schedule, but once you get in a routine you will realise how relaxing and rejuvenating it is when you exercise or meditate. Secondly, learn to relax, remember whatever should happen will happen so there is no use stressing over it, also, relaxing will help you think and plan things in an organised way.

If your hand still goes to the cookie jar or that tub of ice cream whenever you think you need to eat then pause for 15 minutes and after that time see if you are still hungry and NEED to eat the same sugar filled treat. Often if we eat without feeling hungry its a sign that we are undergoing some form of stress. Also, keep a food journal, note down what you eat, when you eat it and how you are feeling when you eat it.

This will help you note the relation between your mood and the type of food you eat when your are feeling emotionally distress and it will help you break the pattern. When you go grocery shopping do not buy junk food, instead stock your kitchen up with fresh fruits and low fat unsaturated food so that when you do eat it is something healthy.

If you are still finding it difficult to stop eating while you are stressed, take the help of a loved one, someone who can watch over you and ease you out of this habit.Talk to a professional if required and when you realise that you are not alone and you have help from friends and family you'll definitely be able to get over this habit.
