How To Successfully Change Your Career After 40
Although some people may regard the so-called "mid-life crisis" as something negative
, there are many psychologists who tell us that this "crisis" is actually a normal part of our journey through our lives. As it turns out, between the ages of about 40 and 60, it's quite normal to take a long hard look at our lives to date and see what we've achieved or, more importantly, not achieved.
We no longer feel like we did in our younger years-that we have forever to get around to doing what we always wanted to do. We feel our mortality much more and take stock of our lives.
If we are not comfortable with our lives to date and what we've achieved, we can experience anything from a mild feeling of restlessness, to a full-blown feeling of "crisis". And then, of course (like that's not bad enough), there's the whole hormone "stew" going on. Mid-life can be a time of more than one sort of "change" for women.
So what if you've arrived at "mid-life" and you're not happy with your lot? Mostly it's this dissatisfaction that can cause a woman to decide to take action-to take control of her life and do what is right for HERSELF. This may be the first time in her life she's done this. Before, there may have been all the duties of raising her children, maybe looking after elderly parents, etc. Up to this point she's lead a "selfless" life, always in the service of others.
And because she's a loving person she wouldn't have had it any other way.
So what's wrong with now living life on your own terms-doing things for yourself for a change? Nothing! You deserve to do what you want to do now. This is your time. Claim it.
One of the problems that can stress you out is other's expectations of you. When we've lived a "selfless" life for a long time, others (such as our grown-up children) can be quite put out when we're not available at the drop of a hat for them anymore. Of course we need to be available to our loved ones, but 24/7? I don't think so. Makes you wonder about this whole "mid-life crisis" thing. Exactly who is having the crisis?
There's probably no bigger motivator in life than to find yourself at its mid-point and discover you're not happy with what you've achieved so far.
You want to leave your mark on the world, or at least on your own world. This realization can provide massive motivation and momentum towards change. This is all good. The thing that stops us doing what we really want at any stage in our lives is lack of motivation. At this stage of our lives we can have this in spades because it's dawned on us that we don't have forever to fulfill our dreams. Harness all of this power and make the change in your life you know you want to make.
You've only got one life, so live it on your own terms-especially the second half!
