How To Tell A Premium Cigar From A Lower Quality Cigar

, therefore, have several differences. But, because premium is a catch-all word, and there are no real rules or regulations for determining when a product can be considered premium, just seeing the word on a cigar wrapper or box does not necessarily mean the cigar really is of a higher-quality.

There are ways to tell if a cigar is truly of premium quality. The first way is by determining if the cigars are machine-made or hand-made. The easiest way to do this is to lay several (at least two) machine-made cigars and hand-made cigars side-by-side.

The first thing you will notice is that the machine-made cigars are almost uniform in appearance, with little, if any differences between them. This is not true of hand-rolled cigars for a number of reasons, including the different methods of hand-rolling, the shape of the leaves in each cigar, and the fact that they are hand-trimmed instead of machine-cut to a uniform size.

The second way to tell a premium cigar is in how it is built. Filler leaves, which come from the top, middle, and bottom of a tobacco plant rather than just one particular location, are rolled accordion style, as opposed to in a tubular shape. The binder leaves, which hold the filler in place, will have the strongest tobacco of all the leaves in the cigar, while the wrapper leaves will come from tobacco that was grown in the shade, to reduce oiliness.

The last way to determine a premium cigar is in the strength of its odor and taste. Premium cigars can be strong, but are usually milder than lower-quality cigars with a more pleasing odor. Anyone who has ever smelled a cheap cigar, with its unpleasant, almost rancid smell will be able to distinguish a premium cigar almost immediately.
