How To Tell When Someone Is Lying To You: Becoming a Human Lie Detector

How can you tell when someone is lying to you? And what can you do about when they are?

These are question that many people ask daily. Why is this? It is because we are surrounded by lies everywhere we go. Studies have shown that people deceive each other in around 30% of our one-on-one interactions, and perhaps even worse couples lie to each other in about a third of their interactions. You may be asking yourself what am I supposed to do about short of hooking my boyfriend up to a lie detector every time we speak?

You can study these techniques and upon mastery you will be able to not only tell when someone is lying to you but find out the truth hiding behind the curtain of deceit.

Using their words against them

A persons words can be very misleading this is because they can be easily manipulated as they are not truly attached to emotions. They can however leave clues behind to whether they speak the truth or they are lying.

When someone uses contractions such as wouldn't instead of would not they are 60% less likely to be lying

When someone is lying they will continue to ramble on with their story until they receive verbal conformation to stop. A liar is uncomfortable with silence

How something is said

How a liar expresses their voice is much different than someone telling the truth.

If they avoid the use of pronouns such I and Me it is a tell-tale when someone is lying

When someone is lying their answer will usual come much slower after you ask the question, this is because they are thinking whether their story fits or not

Other indications of lying

There are many indications that someone is lying, a few more of them include

A liar will always leave out the point of view of a another person, they will include other people in the story but their point of view adds another dimension that the brain can't easily process

If their emotion last longer than a second it is not a true emotion, truthful emotion lasts only a second

Liars will often run of a long list in the hopes that one will go unnoticed

Body Language

As most of know 68% of all communication is based on body language, this makes understanding the body language someone has when they are lying imperative to becoming a human lie detector

When someone is lying they will rarely point at either you or up in the air

When lying a person will often put "roadblocks" such a pillow etc.. between themselves and you as a means of defense

So you now some tips on how to tell when someone is lying. What now? Dr. David Lieberman has created a three step process on how to squeeze the truth out of anyone is any situation. I will outline one example in each step.

Step 1

Step 1 is testing the waters to see if you believe someone is lying, to understand what is going on in their and determine if you should investigate further.

Don't accuse the suspect directly just allude to the situation. If the person is innocent they will answer and leave it at that; however, when someone is lying they will wonder why you are asking them.

Ask something like: "So did anything interesting happen at the party last night?"

If your response includes the word "Why" investigate further

Step 2

Step 2 is used to get your suspect to tell you the truth sometimes without even them knowing what they are doing

Part 1- Accuse them of everything and anything under the sun. For example " You stole money every week, you stole supplies, you broke the copier, you got johnson fired for something he didn't do, etc..."

Part 2- More calmly introduce your suspicion " If only you had stolen the money once, that would've been alright"

Part 3- If you don't get a confession right away step in closer to your suspect this creates anxiety in a liar

Step 3

Step 3 is basically your last ditch effort to get the truth when you are not getting a confession from step 2 and you still believe that something isn't right.

Part 1- The fragility of most peoples ego's can be quite astonishing, this works by using their ego against them. Say "Alright I think i know what's going on here, you would tell me if you could, but your just not able to, I hope it sickens you as much as it does me"

These are just examples of the ways to uncover when someone is lying, as well as just one scenario for each step in the lie detection process. Step 1 has 3 different ways to find out what's in their head, Step 2 and 3 have 11 different sections each to make sure you can find the truth in any section.
