How To Throw A Great Cocktail Party

A cocktail party is a great way to have a lot of people over and have fun

. Because its usually informal, its the perfect setting to invite different groups of friends. And appetizers and a bar allow everyone to find something that they like.

1. Its a good rule of thumb to have 1 lb. of ice per guest. Youll need plenty to chill white wine, beer, and to put in drinks.

2. Have the kinds of glasses appropriate for the drinks you plan to serve. Wine glasses for red and white, champagne flutes, depending on how fancy you want to get, cups for juice and water, highball glasses for mixed drinks, martini glasses, and tumblers for neat drinks like scotch and whiskey.

3. Have extras, and allow people to keep track with glass charms that they put around the stem of their glass.

4. For a 2 hour party, its a good idea to have one bottle for every 2 guests. White usually goes faster than red. For a basic bar, youll want vodka, gin, whiskey, wine and beer. For the go-getters, youll want tequila, rum, vermouth, scotch, and brandy. Mixers include orange and grapefruit juice, coke, sprite, tonic, soda, ginger ale, tomato juice, Tabasco, lemons, limes, horseradish and Worcestershire.

5. Consider hiring a bartender to make drinks. He will allow you ample time to socialize with your guests, and will prepare your bar for you before the guests arrive. You could also create a drink menu if you dont want to buy a full bar.

6. Have coffee available at the end of the party, and a good taxi services phone number at hand for those who need it.

7. When it comes to hors doeuvers, have a variety of seafood, meats, dips, and hot and cold dishes. Serve a desert tray at the end of the party to let people know that it will soon be ending and to satisfy the sweet teeth in the gathering.

8. Plan on serving about 6 bites for every person every hour. One ounce of dip is equivalent to one serving, and if you arent sure, plan for more rather than less.

9. Decide if you want the party to be themed. This can give you a lot of room for creativity.

10. Music is a must have, and will set the tone for the party. Create a mix on your iPod, or just have a bunch of good CDs playing whether its classical or the blues, everyone will jive to it if youre having a good time.

The cocktail party is a great way to provide fun and entertainment during the evening by relying on old fashioned socializing. It gives everyone a chance to eat, drink, and have a good time. Dont have a television turned on and make sure that everyone is mixing well. As a hostess, you want to be making rounds, and ensuring that introductions are made and that no one feels out of place.
