How To Treat Panic Attacks
A panic disorder is a kind of psychological condition that manifests through panic attacks or anxiety attacks
. This can be worse, when it interferes with one's capacity to deal with daily life. While most patients receive panic attack medications like anti-depressants, there are also other ways to treat panic attacks like going to therapy, proper diet, and exercise.
Several medications can lessen the severity of panic attacks or stop them. There are anti-depressants like sertraline and paroxetine that can be very effective in preventing panic attacks. Anti-depressants can completely stop the recurrence of a panic attack and the side effects are mild. This kind of medication can be used for as long as needed, even years.
Alprazolam and colnazepam which are called benzodiazepines are also medicines used to treat panic attacks. These medications can give relief to fear and anxiety. These medications however, can only be used for a short period of time. These kinds of medicines can be addictive, so medication should only last for a few weeks.
Medication can be an effective way to treat panic attacks, but one must realize relying on medicine more often than necessary can lead to an addiction. This can become a whole new problem that may prove detrimental in treating panic disorder.
Going through counseling can be a good alternative in treating panic attacks. Recovery through counseling may however, take longer compared to taking medicine but, counseling has been proven to be an effective means of treatment. A combination of counseling and medicine can also be an effective treatment.
Cognitive behavior therapy can be an effective treatment for panic attacks, since it seeks the cause of the panic disorder and serves in replacing those responses and behavior with substitutes that are more acceptable. Cognitive therapy focuses on the behavior and thinking patterns that are the cause or triggers of a panic attack.
Interoceptive exposure therapy can be another form of treatment that works wonderfully. This kind of therapy activates the panic attack on purpose so that the therapist can demonstrate that no harm is inflicted to the person going through a panic attack. This may look like a risky procedure but, this has been proven to be an effective and natural way to treat panic disorder.
Doing deep breathing exercises, yoga and other kinds of relaxation techniques can also be an ideal way of keeping a panic attack at bay. These kinds of activities can help in eliminating stress in a person's life which may be the cause of anxiety and panic attacks.
Caffeine and sugar should also be avoided, since these have stimulants that can make a person feel irritable and nervous and this may trigger a panic attack.
Natural supplements can also be effective in treating panic attacks. Taking herbal medicine and vitamin supplements like B-vitamins can have a calming after effect which can lessen the possibility of a panic episode.
Medical attention is imperative in the occurrence of a panic attack. Some alternatives however, can be effective as well. Meditation, exercise and therapy are natural ways of dealing with panic attacks and this can be treated effectively.
