There are several ways to measure in a lab. If you want to find an accurate result in your measurement, you want to use a laboratory balance.

If you want to correctly measure the total mass of an object, you need to use a laboratory balance. A beam balance is one of the most commonly used laboratory balances.

The balance scale, the beam balance, and the laboratory balance were one of the first instruments made to help measure mass. The traditional look of these balances included a horizontal lever with arms of equal length. These arms were called the beam. It also had a pan to weigh objects in. This pan was called a scale or a scalepan. Because there was a pan for each side the word "Scales" was used instead of all the other scientific names. When you want to measure something, you simply place the product into one of the pans and place a standard mass in the other pan so that the scale will balance. Today, there is a slider weight, like what you would see at a doctor's office, to create a balance scale.

A Beam Balance

A beam balance is used to measure mass utensils as well as compounds. There are two different types of beam balances that can be used to do an experiment, the first being the triple beam platform and the second the four beam pan balance.

When you are ready to use a balance, use these steps to correctly and accurately reach the right measurement.

Step 1: Make sure that all the riders are on zero. Make sure that the pointer and the swings are also on zero. If your pointer is not on zero then you will need to adjust the screw in order to balance it out.

Step 2: Place the chemicals, compounds, or solutions in a beaker and then add it to the balance platform.

Step 3: Now you can move the rider directly across the beam until you see the pointer drop. Then slowly move the large rider back once. Now you will need to do this with each of the small riders until you finally have the pointer to zero.

Step 4: Now you are ready to record your results. The masses will be in grams, so make sure you create the right equation to get the results.

The laboratory balance can be purchased online and can be used in your home or in a science lab. Wherever you are conducting experiments is where you want to have a balance.

Scales are used for almost everything. If you don't use scales you can't accurately know how much something weighs and the difference in weight from one object to another. Scales play an important role with almost everything, from the food you buy to the weight of a vehicle before it goes over the bridge. The mass of an object is a necessity and scales give us the right tools to figure things out.
