How To Use The Tone And Inflection Of Your Voice To Communicate Effectively
Now lets remember that the primary means of getting our thoughts across to people is by speaking
. People are used to responding to voice requests and this is our primary means of communication with each other. You must learn how to use the tone and inflection of your voice in order to get your message across to other people.
The very first thing that I need to tell you to do is to never ever yell no matter what the situation. Yelling only indicates that you have lost or about to lose control of your temper. This indicates to the recipient that he or she has been successful in frustrating you. Yelling also serves to put that person on the defensive and further serves to shut down their willingness to listen to anything else that you have to say.
The best thing that you can do during times of stress is to lower your voice to just above a whisper. Why? You ask. Well what this does is to put you in control of the situation by causing the other person to have to listen to you. If they wish to hear what you are saying they must pay close attention. This will effectively place you back in the drivers seat and allow you to gain control of the situation. You must be certain to keep your voice calm and collected. You must be the example of control to the other person if you are to get them to mimic your behavior. I have tried this on numerous occasions and believe me it works much of the time. It wont work all of the time, but it will with the majority of people who you will have to deal with.
Speak gently but with authority. Authority is not how loud that you speak but it is speaking with self assurance. People will respond positively to a person who is self assured and exudes self confidence. You dont have to increase the volume of your voice to get cooperation. You just have to have the confidence of knowing that the person to whom you are speaking will respond to you. Remember the statement that you can draw more flies with honey than you can with vinegar. It is certainly true here.
If you are a supervisor or manager everyone knows that you are the boss. You dont have to prove it to yourself or anyone else. All you need to do is to be yourself and tell them what you need to tell them.
If you are not sure of your authority it will come across in your voice when you speak to your subordinates. You need to know in your own mind that they will do what you want them to do before you tell them. Visualize this in your mind, say what you need to say, and watch the results. When you are sure of yourself it will come across in your speech.
A quiet authoritative voice will work wonders with getting things done, and getting objectives met.
One thing which will help you out tremendously will be learning to project your voice when you speak to people. This is not done by speaking in some kind of loud artificial voice. It is done by simply speaking form your chest rather than your throat. Projecting your voice gives your voice that authoritative edge. People respond to a voice which sounds strong naturally.
