. Before you can begin enjoying that premium cigar, you have to cut the cap. While choosing the right windproof lighter is important, having the right cutter on hand is of equal importance. How do you use a straight cut cutter to enhance your enjoyment? The process of cutting a cigar can be somewhat confusing, particularly if you've not had much experience at it.

First, you need to examine the head (cap) of the cigar. The cap should be rounded on the end and then should straighten out as it meets the body of the cigar. You will need to cut the cap just before the sides begin to flatten out, where it meets the wrapper and filler of the cigar. This should be about 1/8th of an inch from the end, though sometimes it is as little as 1/16th of an inch in. Before you touch that windproof lighter, you need to make sure that you cut the cap properly. What does this entail?

First, you will need to remember that you do not need to cut off much of the cap. You only need to expose the filler. If you cut too far down the length of the cigar, you will remove the part of the cap that holds the wrapper in place. An unraveled cigar is not a good option and cannot be smoked. Therefore, make your cut in the right place. To cut, simply insert the end of the cigar into the cutter and squeeze the plunger closed. If you are using a single blade straight cut device, you will need to make sure you press the plunger firmly and swiftly. Cutting too slow is a good way to rip your cigar and incur additional problems.

If you have a torpedo shaped cigar, with a cone shaped end, you will need to cut into the cone to begin smoking. Your straight cutter and windproof lighter can be used on these types of cigars, as well. Cut into the cone before its widest part to avoid cutting the portion that holds the wrapper in place. You should ensure that any cuts made by your cutter are clean edged. Ragged edges can be an indication of insufficient force or dull blades, both of which can ruin a cigar.
