How Your Dentist Is Able To Replace A Lost Tooth
Whether it is the result of years of tooth decay or a sudden injury
, losing a tooth is never a welcome occurrence. However, when it does occur it is important that you understand that your dentist has the full capability to restore your smile. Thanks to advances in dental technology over the year, your dentist has several options that can effectively replace one of your lost teeth.
Dental Implants
The longest lasting and most permanent option to replace a tooth is through the use of a dental implant. An implant is a replacement tooth root that is directly attached to your jawbone. Once the implant is put in, it will act as an anchor for a replacement crown that is put in. To install an implant, your dentist will first anesthetize the area and then securely fasten the implant to your jawbone. You will then need to wait a number of weeks for your gums to heal around the implant. After this, your dentist will take an impression and create a crown that will be attached to the implant. Once the implant and crown are installed, your new tooth will both function and look like any of your natural teeth. Since dental implants become a functional part of your mouth, they can last as long as 25 years or in some cases for an entire lifetime.
Dental Bridges
Another popular option to replace a lost tooth is through the use of a dental bridge. A bridge is an artificial replacement tooth that is held in place on either side by dental crowns. To put a bridge in, your dentist will first reduce the size of the two teeth that will receive dental crowns. After this, your dentist will be able to take a digital impression of the area. From this, your permanent bridge will be created. When the bridge is ready, your dentist will do a final check to make sure the fit and coloring of the bridge is correct. If they are, he or she will use a special cement to attach the bridge. Once attached, bridges are known to last about 15 years or so.
Dentures
If you have lost most or all of your teeth, your dentist may recommend you get fitted for dentures. Depending on your situation, you may receive either partial or complete dentures. If you have lost all or almost all of your teeth, your dentist will mostly likely provide you with a full set of complete removable dentures. If you have only lost several teeth, you will get a set of partial dentures that will use a combination of your natural teeth and artificial ones to fully restore your smile.
